Aide-memoire
60 minute guided tour with video/Somerset House,
London 2004
Aide-memoire was an intimate journey through some of the secret, subterranean spaces of Somerset House. A guided tour for the post-modern age, Aide-memoire explored notions of memory and place through a combination of artefacts, video and text, evoking aspects of the past whilst questioning how that past is represented and deployed in the present. Somerset House became an exemplar of the selection and comodification of memory in the name of heritage.
The story of the house, the people and the pictures was written in a book and that is the book I am reading from. One day some people listened to someone reading that book aloud and that is the story you are now living.
What is the story of Somerset house? Twice the dead have been disturbed and once the memory of the dead.
From memory to myth to mousemat.
